“Denim-on-Denim” takes root in a less-known trend, the “Canadian Tuxedo.” To accurately describe the history of “Denim-on-Denim,” we must first travel back in time to 1951 Vancouver Canada. Envision Bing Crosby at the peak of his career, denied entry into his hotel. According to historian Lynn Downey, the hotel denied him because he was “underdressed.” Instead of a traditional three-piece suit, Crosby wore a full denim outfit by Levi Strauss & Co, resulting in his denial. Concierge Art Cameron stated that he did not appear to be a hotel guest, receiving backlash from Crosby enthusiasts, demanding how he did not recognize “the most famous singer in the world.”
Additionally, Levi Strauss & Co designed Crosby a custom suit out of denim to prevent him from being too dressed down in the future. The tuxedo patch inside even read, “Notice to All Hotel Men: a perfectly appropriate fabric and anyone wearing it should be allowed entrance into the finest hotels.” The “Canadian Tuxedo” further began an innovative fashion revolution, breaking away from traditional textile norms. Throughout the twentieth century, the “Canadian Tuxedo” and “Denim-on-Denim” defined the red carpet, through celebrities such as Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake.
The “Denim-on-Denim” trend continues today. Recently, global girl group KATSEYE’s recent GAP advertisement has received worldwide attention. The group’s “Better in Denim” not only showcases each of the member’s individuality in style, but also promotes inclusivity through clothing and cultures.
“Better in Denim” commemorates the original “Canadian Tuxedo,” exhibiting the importance of experimental looks, while further encouraging the freedom to dress how you want. In the end, Crosby’s accidental fashion statement ultimately resulted in a widespread trend that still continues to defy traditional clothing norms today.
